What you should know about coaxial cable

Types of coaxial cable:
There is a number of types of coaxial cable available.  Each type of cable is engineered for a specific use and function.  It is important to use the correct coaxial cable for the application for which it was designed.  If the incorrect coaxial cable is used then signal degradation will occur.

RG-6    This cable is used primarily for cable and satellite applications.  It can also be used for off-air (VHF/UHF/FM) antenna signals.  It has a frequency response of 1 MHz to 2.4 GHz.  The inside conductor is 18 gauge solid copper.  75 Ohm.  RG6 is CMR (FT4) approved.  This allows the cable to run behind walls and through ceiling rafters.  The FT4 rating is a fire tested burn rate and meets or exceeds the CSA/building code requirements for residential building structures.

RG-59 This cable is used primarily for off-air TV (VHF/UHF/FM) antenna signals.  It can also be used for Ham/CB applications.  It is not recommended for residential cable or satellite use.  It has a frequency response of 1 MHz to 1000 MHz.  The inside conductor is 23 gauge solid copper.  75 ohm.

Installation Note:  Always use compression “F”-type connectors on RG6 coaxial cable.  Crimp-on connectors will cause problems with reception when used with satellite systems or cable systems.  Omega part # 81510367 or 81511377 - Compression “F”-type connectors.
