Home Entertainment cable reference guide

High-quality cables have a great effect on image quality and sound reproduction. Without good quality cable and connections even the highest quality equipment will not perform to it's potential. The following information will assist you in choosing the correct cable for your application to ensure that you get the most out of your home entertainment system.

VIDEO CABLES

HDMI Video Cable (High Definition Multi Media Interface)
  • Recommended for HDTV, digital satellite, video projectors and DVD players.
  • Carries both high definition video (1080i & 720p) and multi-channel audio (up to and including 5.1 and 7.1 digital surround sound) in a single cable.
  • Transmits uncompressed digital video signals.
  • Delivers superior video and outstanding audio.
  • HDMI also carries an integrated remote control channel for intelligent communication between components. This facilitates the use of a universal remote to operate any component in an HDMI system.
DVI Video Cable (Digital Video Interface) *
  • Recommended for HDTV, and digital satellite video hook-up.
DVI cables were the predecessor to HDMI cable. They transmit the same high quality video signals as HDMI cables
Transmits uncompressed high definition digital video (1080i & 720p).
Note: DVI cabled do not carry audio signals. Separate audio cables are required.
Component Video Cable *
  • Recommended for HDTV receivers, video projectors and DVD players with component outputs to TV/monitors or displays with component video inputs.
  • This type of connection separately carries the R/G/B (Red Green and Blue) signals to the TV/monitor. This method of connection ensures maximum signal integrity and extremely high quality video reproduction
  • Component cable has color coded ends for R/G/B connection
  • Please see installation notes at the end of this section.
 S-Video *
  • Recommended for S-Video signals from TV/HDTV, DVD players, satellite receivers, S-VHS VCRs, camcorders, video projectors etc.
Used exclusively between S-Video inputs and outputs.
Dual-coaxial "S" cable carries the colour and brightness signals (chrominance and luminance) on two separate paths providing better picture resolution and improved video reproduction.
Composite Video (RCA-type to RCA-type)
  • *Composite video should be used only when HDMI, DVI, Component and S-Video connections are not available.
All video signals are carried on one cable which does not produce the highest quality video signal.
  • * These cables do not carry audio signals. Separate stereo audio or digital optical audio cables should be used between components to transmit the audio signal.
Coaxial Cable (F-type connector)
  • Used for most common hook-ups such as satellite receivers cable converter boxes, TV's, VCR's and antennas.
Carries (and combines) both audio and video signals.
Due to its lower quality signal, this type of cable is generally not used for home theater systems.
RG6 - Coaxial Cable
  • This wire is used for satellite , residential cable TV signals, applications and is rated at 75-Ohm - 2.4 Ghz.
FT4 rated cable
  • FT4 is a fire-tested burn rate that meets or exceeds CSA/Building code requirements for residential or commercial structures. An FT4 rating allows you to safely run cables behind walls and through ceiling rafters. All of Omega bulk RG-6 coaxial cable is FT4 rated.
AUDIO CABLES

Digital Optical Cable
  • Optic cable transfers multi-channel audio information from DVD, DSS, Home Theater receivers and Dolby Digital audio sources.
  • Delivers superior home theater digital audio signals through fiber optic technology.
  • Carries multi-channel audio (5.1 or 7.1, digital surround sound) in a single cable.
Stereo Audio Cable (RCA-type to RCA-type)
  • Separate cables carry the right channel (typically coloured coded Red) and left channel (typically coloured coded White) of stereo audio information.
A pair is needed to deliver a stereo audio signal.
